Welcome to Saint Therese Little Flower Parish, a small urban core Roman Catholic church with a big heart, located in the Blue Hills neighborhood of mid-town Kansas City, Missouri. We are a very faith-filled, diverse, spirit-led community that is small enough to be a very intimate and close knit family, yet large enough to accomplish the task of serving our brothers and sisters in the community who are less fortunate than we are.
Established in 1925, the year Saint Therese of Lisieux, the Little Flower was canonized, we celebrated our 75th anniversary in 2000 and have been in our current church building since 1948. We are a community of well over 200 families and looked upon as a pillar in the neighborhood, admired and highly regarded for our dedication to community outreach.
Saint Therese was recognized as one of the best parishes in the United States in a book published in 2001 entitled Excellent Catholic Parishes - The Guide to Best Places and Practices authored by Paul Wilkes. He wrote about Saint Therese: "Church community organization works to make church neighborhood safer; emergency assistance program; prayerful and welcoming Sunday liturgies; gospel choir." Also, the 2002 issue of the Pitch newspaper's Best of Kansas City issue recognized Saint Therese as Kansas City's Best Church.
Saint Therese continues to attract the attention of the greater Kansas City community. The July 14th, 2009 edition of the Kansas City Star newspaper's Sunday Magazine insert featured our church as the the cover story. The lengthy, seven page article (with several large color photographs) provided an insight into our history, diversity, and community involvement. In a separate commentary, the editor of the magazine wrote that reading the cover story moved her to want to attend a Mass at Saint Therese, even though she's not Catholic.
You will find a very warm and welcoming spirit as you walk through the doors of our church. Our Gospel Choir lends to a very spiritual and upbeat liturgy at our Sunday,
9:15 am Mass. We are also privileged to be the first Catholic parish in the Kansas City area to host an Anglican Use Mass, held Saturday afternoon at 4 pm. We are continuing to grow as a parish, having welcomed new Catholic members as a result of opening our arms and hearts to this new community of Catholic worshipers.
We invite you to come and experience our unique, prayerful, spirit filled Masses and look forward to sharing our special community with you.
